Langston Hughes, leader of the Harlem Renaissance, was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1901. Though Hughes grew up in a series of homes all over the Midwest, this home serves as a reminder of his humble beginnings right here in Joplin. An author, playwright, and activist, Hughes is often recognized as the most important contributor to the early jazz poetry scene. Hughes acknowledged Joplin as an important contributor to his childhood, even coming to the Minnie Hackney Center in 1956. Langston Hughes recognized our area’s influence on him and it is time that our area recognize his influence.
